Orthognathic surgery is corrective surgery that involves repositioning the jaws and occasionally, the adjoining facial bones. It is performed when conventional braces are not totally able to correct a bite or jaw problem. This type of surgery is used most often for non-growing patients such as older teenagers and adults. Most patients require surgery on one jaw only, but the repositioning of both jaws is sometimes necessary.
If orthognathic surgery is a considered option for your problem, a consultation will be set up prior to the start of any treatment, with one of the many outstanding oral and maxillo-facial surgeons we have the opportunity to work with. Procedures, risks, side effects, results, costs and predetermination of insurance coverage are issues that will be clarified before treatment is started. In orthognathic surgical cases there is usually a period of pre-surgical orthodontic preparation (9-12 months) followed by surgery/rest period (2-3 months) and then post surgical orthodontic finishing (9-12 months).
